The closing ceremony for the School District of Washington staff was held Wednesday morning, May 23, in the CJB Theater at Washington High School.

The ceremony marked the end of the 2017-18 school year and celebrated accomplishments, presented service awards, technology recognition, recognized and thanked retirees, announced staff scholarships, and announced WINGS/The Washington Missourian Educational Excellence Award. 

Superintendent Dr. Lori VanLeer and Assistant Superintendents Dr. Brendan Mahon, Dr. Judy Straatmann and Dr. Rachael Franssen each addressed the staff.

Board of Education Vice President John Freitag also spoke to the staff.

Prior to the ceremony, the Board of Education and administration honored the retirees over breakfast.

*Six finalists were named for the WINGS Educator of the Year, sponsored by the Missourian and two anonymous Washington High School alumni. The winner will be announced in the fall at the WINGS Hall of Honor Ceremony. Finalists are Cody Stapel (Special Education, Washington West Elementary), Dan Brinkmann (Automotive Technology, Four Rivers Career Center), Melissa Ziegler (Science, Washington Middle School), Tim Branson (No Excuses, Washington High School), Heather Clark (Counselor, South Point Elementary), and Jennifer Maune (Third grade, Augusta Elementary).

*Penny Wilmesherr, Secretary, Washington High School, was named the WINGS Support Staff of the Year. The six finalists were Wilmesherr, Dawn Beste (Special Education Para, Washington West Elementary), Dave Wells (Custodian, Washington High School), Paula Mueller (SDOW Network Technician), Nancy Shiels (Secretary, Washington Middle School), and Craig Vonder Haar (SDOW Communications Manager).

*Receiving the Dr. Jane and Doug Reed Scholarship for $1,000 apiece were Clearview Elementary second-grade teacher Bridget Phelps (certified staff) and Washington High School Special Services para Kim Voss (support staff).

*The top selling school of the WINGS discount cards was Campbellton Elementary.

*Retiring staff members are John McCarthy, Pattie Kreamalmeyer, Janet Hagedorn, Marchel Sulschi, Ileana Sulschi, Lisa Huxel, Julie McBride, Georgana Hagan, Karin Parks Wolking, Bob Pecka, Dan Heck, Tamara Milligan, Sara Barnett, Debbie Brueggen, Peggy Brinker, Jana Monzyk, Kurt Althage, Donna Frankenberg, Jeanette Marquart and Jose Gamez.

*Honored for 30 years of service were Kevin Hunewill and Margie Longseth.  

*Honored for 25 years of service were Karen Kassebaum, Barb Laramore, Julie McBride, Kate Montgomery, Stacey Siefken and Kelly Worstell.

*Honored for 20 years of service were Laura Bruckerhoff, Lisa Coffman, Donna Frankenberg, Ann Gaebe, Dr. Judy Straatmann, Dr. Dawn Hellebusch, Dr. Kelle McCallum, Cathy Hemmer, Sandy Knickmeyer, Gary Maune, Erin Monzyk, Laurie Reed, Ed Stahl, Tracy Straatmann, Greg Traffas, Julie Trentmann, Michelle Turner and Becky Zanin.

*Honored for 15 years of service were Dr. Lori VanLeer, Barbara Gansmann, Stephanie Juengling, Tom Mathews, Jaime Opfer, Melanie Trentmann, Dana Vogel and Robert York.  

*Honored for 10 years of service were Meghan Brueggemann, Jana Buchanan, Kaye Chisholm, Amanda Clark, Chris Dunard, Cristy Esparza, Jennifer Gamez, Dane Gough, Erin Gough, Julie Grafrath, Elizabeth Hobbs, Katie Hogenmiller, Tricia Holm, Kim Hunt, Maria Kakadiaris, Lindsay Kober, Rob Landers, Jenny Meers, Scott Morgan, Tracy Niccum, Kara Pate, Anita Rehmeier, Lorna Schulz, Debbie Shafferkoetter, Brian Stuesse, Cassandra Suggs, Danette Wood, Rebecca Young and Terry Zanin.  

*Completing the Teaching With Technology Leadership Academy were:

Professional Level (Year 1): Jenny Meers, Jessica Fitzgerald and Chris Becker.

Specialist Level (Year 2): Michelle Prewitt.

Master Level (Year 3): Ryan Brennan, Melissa Golder, Jill Griffin, Valerie Jankowski, Nicole Kottmann, Keshan Vogt and Kelly Worstell.

Labadie Elementary School has a new look outside of its front doors.

Maddie Stecko, a fourth-grade student at Labadie, and her family helped with the new look.

Maddie’s mother purchased a church pew and Maddie’s grandfather engraved the pew to read, “Labadie Elementary.”

Labadie Elementary School held its Kindergarten Celebration on Friday, May 11.

The kindergarten students, under the direction of Labadie Elementary music teacher Maggie Butler, took part in a musical presentation entitled, “Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes.”

Following the musical presentation, students received certificates for completing kindergarten.

Labadie Elementary Principal Jennifer Pecka and kindergarten teacher Ann Maerli presented the certificates.

A large crowd of family members, staff and fellow students watched the program in the Labadie Elementary gymnasium.
